I hate the term real estate. It's cold and business-y, everything that tends to make me hide under the bed. What I write about is space: homes, cafes, places where you can do work, pet the cat, and Google your next-door-neighbor from 10 years ago. I write about places. And I like to do it from a personal perspective.

Wintertime ... and the rentin ain't easy

On a morning when a friend emails me from Kalamazoo, Mich., to tell me she can't afford the rent, I read this.

Hard to know what to do about cries for affordability. I'm always more renter-friendly than landlord-friendly, but I can hardly tell them to lower their prices to benefit me ... can I?
